Church and Community

Church and Community

God’s mission in the world is the reconciliation and renewal of the whole of creation. The church is a community of followers of Jesus in one place, exploring how they are invited to participate in God’s mission. Attributed to many different writers is the catchphrase “It is not the church of God that has a mission in the world but the God of mission who has a church in the world.”

To this end we hope to engage in our community by “Growing in Spirit” and “Reaching out in love.” We are asking God how we can be ‘good neighbour’ in our community. The “Church in the Trees” was built on 1997 as a community facility. We currently host a mixture of our own events and programs alongside hiring the space.

Current Groups include:
Southlakes U3A
Sustainability Group
Al Anon
Exercise Classes
Frustration Cards
Craft and Learning
Ladies Fellowship
‘Red Dove Choir’ Music Club
‘Branch’ Op Shop stand alone onsite Tue-Wed-Thu 9.30am to 2.30pm

We are exploring whether or not other community groups or individuals might like to collaborate with us on a “Fix It Festival: less throwaway, more valuing…” in 2018. The idea is to offer repair, reuse, recycle or repurpose based workshops and services alongside a Festival Day.

We are also exploring possibilities for gathering children, youth & families at “Church in the Trees.” Our Minister Rev. Rob Hanks has been a mentor participating in the “Youth Frontiers” program with Year 9 students at Morisset High School in 2017.
